Bowling–It’s Kind of a Big Deal Around Here.

What do you think of when I say, “league bowling”?  Do you think about Jeff Bridges and John Goodman in The Big Lebowski throwing back a few white russians?  Or maybe you think about Woody Harrelson losing his arm to a ball return in King Pin?

That’s not quite the image you’ll get at a typical night of bowling in Wichita.  Close … when it comes to the white russians or alcoholic beverages.  But the intensity of losing a limb–not so much.

Here in Wichita, you’ll find some of the nation’s finest bowlers competing in leagues for top prizes!

Monday nights at Thunderbird Lanes, The Thunderbird Scratch Classic has 26 3-man teams who compete with 200 plus averages.

Tuesday nights are hot at Northrock Lanes during the Bud Select League with another 3-man scratch league. Northrock houses about 16 teams competing for 36 weeks.

On Wednesday, you can find my team bowling at West Acres Bowling Center on the Bud 18 Pack League.  This league has handicap–thank goodness! If you aren’t familiar with what handicap means, it basically levels the playing field for bowlers who are advanced and not so advanced.  It’s still one of the most competitive leagues in the city and pays top-notch at the end of the 36-week competition.

Last but certainly not least–the youth league bowling in Wichita at West Acres Bowling Center is the 2nd largest in the nation!!  I am very proud to say that I am a part of what builds this program by coaching on Saturday’s for the youth leagues and helping run the Bowling 101 program on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s, too!  Bowling 101 is an 8-week program great program that helps young bowlers learn how to bowl starting from the most basic skills.  This is the prerequisite to USA Bowling, another 8-week youth bowling program that goes more in-depth with coaching and team bowling.
